Because sleep also allows the body to repair muscles and tissue that may have been damaged or stressed while you were awake. Stress produces a hormone called cortisol, which can heighten your awareness, lead to inflammation, and ultimately disrupt your sleep quality and patterns. Even if you sleep a full 8-10 hours, it likely won’t be enough to counteract the stress effect on your sleep.
